Equity Research Cluster Funding
Acevedo, Skeer Equity Grant Awardees

The Equity Research Cluster is happy to announce that Andrea Acevedo, PhD, and Margie Skeer, Ph.D., have received seed funding to support collaborative grant proposal development. Dr. Acevedo, Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Health, has developed a proposal to assess the health impact of unhealthy alcohol use on communities of color as community members reach older ages. She will be collaborating with Adolfo Cuevas, PhD, Assistant Professor of Community Health.

Dr. Skeer, Associate Professor of Public Health and Community Medicine has developed a proposal to (1) understand the less overt risk factors in the development of opioid use disorders, and (2) fill in research gaps on screening practices for opioid prescriptions with the goal of informing practice and policy implications. Her study will build on previous research that evaluated physician perspectives on screening practices for opioid prescriptions that address acute pain. Margie Skeer’s team includes Thomas Stopka, PhD, and Kenneth Chui, PhD, both Associate Professors of Public Health and Community Medicine. Dr. Stopka is also co-chair of the Equity Research Cluster.

Funding for these grants has been provided by the Tufts University Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) and the Research and Scholarship Strategic Plan (RSSP).

ERC Survey Data Available to Tufts Community
Equity Research Cluster Offers National Survey Data from Three Waves

The Equity in Health, Wealth, and Civic Engagement Research Cluster has data from three nationally representative surveys which are available for use in the Tufts community. Our first-round data from 2020 is a special resource for students working on a supervised thesis or dissertation, senior thesis, or master’s capstone project or thesis. Wave 2 or Wave 3 data (June 2022) are available to faculty by application to the ERC. Examples of Wave 1 and Wave 2 data are available here on our interactive websiteequityresearch.tufts.edu. Please contact Peter Levine for more information about our data and to get started.

The survey is funded by the Tufts University Office of the Vice Provost for Research and the Research and Scholarship Strategic Plan (RSSP). Additional support has been provided by the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI).

Reparations: News and Coming Survey Analysis
ERC Survey Wave 3 Queries Attitudes Towards Reparations

California’s task force on reparations for Black Americans has documented over 170 years of systemic discrimination by the state and has demanded comprehensive reparations for those who have been harmed by government-sanctioned oppression. The task force is calling for a new state office to directly address past and future harms, while helping eligible Californians who are Black enroll in a reparations program. A 2021 Washington Post poll found that nearly two-thirds of Americans opposed the idea of cash reparations to Americans who are Black. Almost 50% of Democrats favored the idea, and over 90% of Republicans opposed the idea. The Equity Research Cluster’s Wave 3 nationally representative survey will further investigate this question to understand attitudes towards reparations for Americans who are descendants of slavery. The new survey data was delivered in June and is under analysis.

The survey is funded by the Tufts University Office of the Vice Provost for Research and the Research and Scholarship Strategic Plan (RSSP). Additional support has been provided by the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI).
